50th Birthday

It’s you’re birthday today,
So here is a little poem for you,
Hopefully in my absence it will make you feel less blue,
But what birthday is this again? I haven’t a clue,
I’ll run through a few birthdays you’ve had, and stop when it’s true:

It’s not your 40th,
Managing three kids age thirteen eight and eleven,

It’s not your 30th,
Finally done with the twenties and thinking of peace and heaven,

It’s not your 21st,
So you’re not trying to get sloshed,

It’s not your 18th,
When you get the right to vote, become an adult, and think oh my gosh,

It’s not your 13th,
When you join the ranks as a teen,

It’s not your 4th,
When you learn it’s not right to always scream,

It’s not your 1st,
When you tear that cake apart,

It’s your 50th,
When you become and old fart,

But joking aside, I think I hit the right number,
Where it’s fine to finish your wine and then take a deep slumber,
Where you look back at all the things that happened in your wake,
The uniqueness of your actions similar to the pattern of a snowflake,
The successful children you raised to be caring, considerate, and nice,
The things you’ve done can’t be given a price.

But look to the future and do not dwell on the past,
Allow yourself to say it went by so fast,
Time is not a cycle it’s a linear thing,
Or is it the other way around? Summer-Autumn-Winter-Spring?
The semantics of which matter not,
When the next morning the sun will rise and the horse with trot,

In the grand scheme of things your life is actually insanely small,
Haters can say this to but don’t hesitate to recall,
The children you raised through the thick and thin,
Who are bred to succeed and who are born to win,
But most of all who are taught to love,
A gift that is so precious and pure it can be compared to a dove,

By now you may find yourself in tears–the screen becoming blurry,
So I’ll go ahead and finish this poem in a hurry,
You know I could write for the rest of my days,
About how I love in so many ways,
But now I begin to tear,
And this poem must end here.

Love,
Phil
